For my senior project at Kihei Charter School I decided to do a Mural of two turtles. What gave me the idea of doing turtles was my childhood. Growing up in Maui and going to the beach a lot as a kid I would often see a lot of turtles. I would go snorkeling and surfing and I always felt like turtles were a sign of good luck. So even though I’ve been struggling a lot this year. I was hoping that this mural could bring good luck to me and the other people that get to see it.
That’s where my title comes in. My project is called Inspiring People Through Art. The reason I chose this title is because I struggle a lot with the academic side of school, and throughout my school career art has helped me a lot. I thought that by doing a mural, it could inspire other students to be more creative and realize that there can be more to school than just the academic side. I believe that art is very important in schools, and I'd really like to see more students take an interest in it.
One thing I loved about this project was that I got to work on it with my dad. This was great because we got to spend a lot of quality time together while we worked on it which was a lot of fun. I also had some friends assist me with painting the background, so that was also a fun experience to spend time with them and work together.
While working on this project, I definitely have some takeaways and things I learned. One thing I learned is that I need to work on my time management skills because when I was doing this project, I saved up to much to do until the end and had to rush in order to complete it. If I had used my time better, I would have been able to add even more to make it look better, and I would have been a lot less stressed when it came time to finish it. I also learned that my family and friends are supportive and they were there when I needed them for help which was a really nice thing. I am happy overall with the way the mural turned out, but if I had to redo this, I would definitely start earlier and use all the time I had available to me.
Like I previously said, I hope this inspires students when they see it to take an interest in art. I also think it is nice to just have more art around the school and it can be seen from the parking lot when guests or teachers arrive. Art has always been a passion of mine, and I was really happy to be able to share that passion with the students, staff and families of Kihei Charter School.
